For our 17-pound dog, we had been utilizing a short, miniature ball thrower with a little tennis ball. It didn't really differ much from throwing the ball with your arm. By picking up the ball, it saved me from having to repeatedly stoop over. However, the new ball thrower, which has a considerably longer handle and uses a standard-sized tennis ball, performs flawlessly. Immediately after the first throw, it was a success. I have no trouble getting a lot of height and distance. It's also an option if I don't want the ball to travel too far. Very happy. Our dog appears more animated. My dog would take the ball and chew it up when we first received this ball launcher, so I almost gave up and sent it back. However, I made the decision to teach her to immediately bring it back, and with supervision, that occurs. I bought it on August 27, 2016, and I've been using it with my German Shepherd puppy ever since. It appears to function just below the promised 10, 15, or 40 feet launch distance in terms of battery life. I haven't experienced any issues with the battery when I've used it, though because we only use this indoors, it's plugged in most of the time.The rubber gears that launch the ball initially appeared to be able to withstand light use, but as time has gone on, my dog has learned how to use it on his own, and combined with his voracious need for fetch, it just doesn't look like they are going to last over time.
