For our 17-pound dog, we had been utilizing a short, miniature ball thrower with a little tennis ball. It didn't really differ much from throwing the ball with your arm. By picking up the ball, it saved me from having to repeatedly stoop over. However, the new ball thrower, which has a considerably longer handle and uses a standard-sized tennis ball, performs flawlessly. Immediately after the first throw, it was a success. I have no trouble getting a lot of height and distance. It's also an option if I don't want the ball to travel too far. Very happy. Our dog appears more animated. She finds the game to be more "mysterious" because of the longer distance and higher bounce.

My dog would take the ball and chew it up when we first received this ball launcher, so I almost gave up and sent it back. However, I made the decision to teach her to immediately bring it back, and with supervision, that occurs. I took the launcher and positioned it out of Lucy's immediate reach every time she didn't immediately bring the ball back. But this extra step, which worked perfectly for Lucy, was here. The competitive Lucy is fierce. She didn't like the thought that I would put my ball in before she could bring hers back, so I would hold a second ball above the machine. These two concepts worked well together to deliver the outcomes I desired. Every time, Lucy will return the ball immediately away. Lucy would probably just chew the additional ball to pieces if I wasn't there holding it in my hand. Since she was trained, Lucy hasn't worn out a ball from the launcher. But because they must be soft, these balls won't likely damage a dog when they launch. Therefore, they will eventually need to be replaced. The ability of your dog to follow a "back up" command, like Lucy can, is helpful. For us, "back, back, back" works great. UPDATE: Contact customer care if you need assistance. They have been quite beneficial to me. We only allow our dog to play after he has gone pee outside. She no longer has any mishaps at all!

Review:

I bought it on August 27, 2016, and I've been using it with my German Shepherd puppy ever since. It appears to function just below the promised 10, 15, or 40 feet launch distance in terms of battery life. I haven't experienced any issues with the battery when I've used it, though because we only use this indoors, it's plugged in most of the time. The rubber gears that launch the ball initially appeared to be able to withstand light use, but as time has gone on, my dog has learned how to use it on his own, and combined with his voracious need for fetch, it just doesn't look like they are going to last over time. The rubber has started to wear away, and I am hearing the ball launch once or twice more frequently, followed by a hissy fit of rage as my dog paws at the machine because the ball gets trapped. No one else will be able to unstick it, so I can't let him use it unless I'm present. He vents his fury on the machine by chewing away the rubber feet and, most recently, the blue ring at the front. I wish the rubber had held up better, but alas, these issues started right after the 6-month warranty period ended, so I'm out of luck.Overall, I'd say the device lives up to expectations and my dog like it, but it simply doesn't seem like it will survive much longer with the gears deteriorating. While this might keep your dog happy if he insists on playing fetch, don't expect it to last more than a year if it is used frequently.Edit: iFetch Customer Support contacted me and informed me that the guarantee is actually one year long and not only six months. When I contacted them, they offered to send not just a brand-new unit to replace the damaged one but also to pay for the transportation of the old one back. They went above and beyond, which I found to be extremely impressive. I'm happy to say that there have been no problems with the replacement unit thus far, but only time will tell. The device did not function at all when it was first plugged in, but after a 14-hour charge period, it did. If your product does not function at first, give it some time to charge and then try again. Regards, iFetch!

amazing toy Although my puppy is incredibly intelligent, loud noises make her nervous. I simply left the bone out with her other toys for a few days to get her acclimated to seeing it as a toy as I introduced her to it. Then, before turning it on, I spread some peanut butter in the tire grooves and gave it to her to play with alone. She was thrilled when I turned on the bone for the first time! She doesn't mind it, despite the noise it makes on our flooring. Although I'd prefer if she could leave it on our rug, whatever.

My lab likes it; it doesn't throw the ball as far as I had hoped, but it keeps a one-year-old lab happy till he is exhausted; I'm pleased with the product; he still won't put the ball in himself, but that's just him being stubborn; good product.

It works excellent, but my dogs didn't play with it that much. It comes with short-lived foam balls, but Kong XS balls work just as well.
