Edited on 3/8/2018: I discussed the base swivel with Yost customer care. After completing an email warranty form, they immediately sent a replacement base, and Pat was friendly and helpful. I installed it today after it arrived. This base's new locking plate performs well; there is no racking of the bolts, and the swivel action is effortless and smooth. I upgraded this rating from four to five stars in recognition of the wonderful quality and helpful customer service.Original assessment I spent a lot of time inadvertently suffering with a little, cheap vise. I was unaware of the benefits of having a larger, multipurpose vise like this Yost. With the exception of the swivel base, this item is quite sturdy and appears to be nicely manufactured. But the swivel base is awful. Although the concept should work, the locking disc's casting is terrible; the bolt recesses are overly large, allowing the bolts to rack and bind as the base spins. Since I won't use this feature frequently, I'll put up with it and take pleasure in the vise's other features. Still highly advised.

I've been looking for a bench vise for a while now. There has always been that one time when you think to yourself, "Man, I wish I had a bench vise to hold onto this piece of wood."I looked into many bench vises since I needed something that was both useful and reasonably priced. To look at choices, I hauled my wife to Home Depot, Lowe's, and Harbor Freight. It all comes down to how big of a bench vise you actually need and how much money you're willing to spend.I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a mechanic or a skilled handyman; rather, I'm just a homeowner who enjoys working on things around the house when I know I can complete a task and utilize this bench vise as a third hand or arm as needed. Overall, it fulfills my needs for light-duty tasks perfectly. Additionally, it features an anvil so that you can beat something with it while it is resting on the anvil.Installation wasn't too challenging. The holes did not match the template I had acquired from the internet, despite my best efforts to match them up. In the end, I placed the bench vise in the desired location and marked the holes with pencil. I then drilled the holes using a 9/16th drill bit. I then used a leftover 2X4 to cut two pieces, each about 6", to use as a bracket underneath the bench. I made the necessary drillings. The bench vise was then mounted on top, four 1/2" bolts were pushed through the base and underneath the bench, the two brackets I had created were lined up into the holes, and now I had a functional setup. I got the Yost 750-DI as a birthday gift. Upon arrival, the package or box was in flawless shape. The handle of the vice was bent, and the chrome finish was flaking off of it when I took it out of the box. Since there was no sign of shipping damage in the package, it was probably destroyed at the manufacturing. To begin with, the handle would have needed to be bent with considerable force. On Yost.com, I registered the vice. I then explained the issue in an email to customer service because it was Sunday. A replacement main screw and handle will be shipped out that day, Ryan Nelis at Yost wrote to me in an email on Monday morning to apologize for the issue. Later on Monday, I received a tracking number. The component comes on Wednesday. The process of removing the old one and replacing it just took a few minutes. Despite being constructed in China, this vice boasts excellent fit and finish. No kinks, everything moves easily and without slack. With 12 predetermined stop points spaced every 30 degrees, the jaws may spin 360 degrees. It has incredible holding power. I inserted the old main screw I had previously removed into the vice's "pipe jaws" and tightened it. I was able to bend the original main screw, but the vice wouldn't budge at all. It has greatly thrilled me. Without a doubt, I would buy another Yost vice!

All is well thus far. Durability is a major issue with all of these budget vices, particularly the jaws breaking because they are hollow and made of cast steel. This vice's steel is allegedly superior grade cast steel that has a compressive strength of around 65,000 psi. I purchased this particular Vice after seeing a friend use it (and abuse it) daily for almost a year while mounted on his service vehicle. When fabricating for repairs on dock levelers, etc., he hammers on steel components, but it has not yet broken. I adore the pipe jaw and all the different angles the Vice can be swiveled to. I eventually had to acquire my own small vise because I adore the one that my dad has been using for more than ten years. I cannot suggest this vise enough if you solder, construct models, work on small gadgets, or assemble or paint any type of small craft. Most items won't be damaged by the plastic clamps because they are soft enough. If I want to assure softness, I just place a microfiber towel between the clamps and the item. There is no practical need to screw the base to anything because of its weight, but you certainly could. It is a thousand times better than one of those crappy "helping hands" things with alligator clips and a magnifying glass, which I primarily use for soldering small PCBs and P2P wired projects. Versatile, well-made, and incredibly handy for creating, manufacturing, building, and putting together. Simple to use. Buy one! Buy two!

The fact that this vise may be mounted in a variety of ways is a blessing. The lack of clear instructions in the directions was another factor in the lengthy process. Both a recommendation for the type of mounting hardware to be used and a template for drilling the holes for the rods were absent. As a result, instead of giving this five stars, I'm giving it four.Please remember that this is only the beginning. no mounting equipment. not a jaw. But given that your specific bench will vary substantially in terms of the screw length and jaw width, that is the way it must be. In my case, I splurged on a 2x6 piece of oak to use as the jaws and used Number 14 flat wood screws as my mounting hardware. I also fashioned the end pieces on my handle out of some of the oak (1" hardwood doweling). pleased with the outcome.ALSO …with relation to the handle. The handle's ability to slide back and forth is helpful. You'll want to be able to slide it all the way to the end piece at times so that it is out of the way. Count on me for this. My assisting hand type holder has never performed satisfactorily.I looked into many different vises, and for the price, this one seemed to offer rotation and swivel in every direction that I needed.As long as you put it on a flat surface (not wood), which is what I recommend, it retains the suction well.I'm including a picture of it mounted to my refrigerator with a miniature copper chair firmly gripped in the vice.Although I am aware that this is not how you would use it, I wanted to demonstrate how effectively the suction holds on the right kind of surface and how little an object it can retain.My husband started using it for his remote-controlled cars, which is my main issue right now. This tiny vice comes in quite helpful for quick hobby projects. Mine required some sanding to achieve smooth movement because it had some very rough casting marks on it when it arrived and the screw that keeps the main screw bar in place was loose.The plastic jaw coverings are detachable, and underneath them are working metal jaws, not simply a flimsy framework for the plastic as I had anticipated. The main screw that moves the vice jaw simply rotates. The threaded hole that the main screw threads through to move the jaw causes me a little concern because it seems a little too thin. However, the way the jaw is designed makes it seem like I can easily make a nut to fit in the recess behind the hold to further support the jaw's clamping ability if it is required, though.This is excellent if you need a place to put anything to hold electronics for soldering, aluminum rc parts for modification, or 3D printed parts for finishing work. You should probably think about something a little more robust if you need something to hold a block of steel while you drill and tap for a 3/8 bolt.
