Aside from aspiring bluegrass musicians, I hazard a guess that the desire to play the mandolin can be linked to a particular song; for me, it was Led Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore." But until I came upon this mandolin and heard the pricing, buying a stringed instrument for just a few songs seemed very excessive.I've been playing guitar for more than 30 years, so I didn't anticipate this mandolin to be concert hall standard; all I wanted was something that wouldn't break while I was learning to play it. When it arrived, the ability to essentially open the box and begin playing was a welcome surprise (after getting it in tune, of course). The instrument appears to be of low quality construction (the wood feels like cardboard, and the machinery has a toy-like feel), yet it is actually rather durable. More essential, though, is the fact that it plays and sounds like a mandolin should. If anything, the playability of this entry-level mandolin has aroused my attention to the point where I'm thinking about investing in a better mandolin. Any less-than-stellar musical instrument, in my opinion, that keeps a musician interested is serving a role.The only drawback would be the quality of the machine heads because mandolins have delicate tuning requirements and high string tension. The pressure needed to crank the machine forced it to revolve too quickly, and I snapped a string as a result. Since mandolin strings are typically not available individually, breaking one string required me to buy a full new set of eight strings, and restringing a mandolin is not exactly "fun" or "simple."I've always thought it wise to be thrifty when making that initial purchase because the desire to play an instrument has the potential to be a very expensive endeavor. For a beginner instrument, this is about as inexpensive a buy as you can make.

I should probably declare up front that I'm a beginner mandolin player. The strings are adequate to begin playing on and it arrived packaged carefully and undamaged, but I'll agree with a few other reviews I've read about this instrument in saying that I believe buying new strings for it would be a good idea. This instrument is excellently crafted. All of the gear on it is straight and well aligned, and it is gorgeous. When tuned properly, it sounds fantastic. It doesn't sound "tin" like some slightly less expensive instruments. It feels quite evenly balanced to me. The instrument does not appear exactly as in the image. It sparkles. I'm so far quite impressed, and I prefer it a lot more than my old $50 instrument. Compared to a $50 instrument, it is a million times better. I advise newbies like me to try it!
