For the hammer drill feature, I bought it. I always have to drill into cement because the building has cement block walls and flooring. This drill is extremely smooth running, has lots of power, and is nicely balanced, just like my TACKLIFE corded drill. It surprises me a little that it's a keyed chuck. It must be a better option because of the power and hammer functionality. I had to drill eight holes in concrete in the two days I had the tool. I have to anchor the compressor units now because I'm installing a new air conditioner. For the four brackets, use full numbers. Then I had to cut a hole through a tiled floor and then through concrete to install a safety anti-tip bracket for a new electric range. Light drilling butter was used. seamless and naturally. Upgrade to a cord with 12 gauge wire if you require a longer cord. Of course, if you're drilling into brick or concrete, you'll need a heavier drill for general use. I was a little dubious that a drill under $50 would function considering that some of these go for over $200, but this one worked admirably for my purposes. After using battery-operated tools in the past and been disappointed, I too prefer this corded equipment to one that is battery-operated. I've only had the drill for a few days, so I can't say for sure how long it will last. Having other Makita 18V LXT products, it made sense to spend $75 on this single tool. This Makita LXT hammer drill is not the most expensive model. Although it's higher middle range, I choose to get it because of how small it is. It will be ideal for my restricted handyman-type uses, which will be its only usage. The strength and battery longevity of these 18V and 18Vx2 Makita cordless tools continue to wow me. You might want to upgrade if you still have older NiCad power tools for which the only replacement batteries available are those from China and only function perhaps 75% of the time. The sheer number of variations DeWalt offers on what are essentially the same drills is nearly bewildering to me. I used to believe that this one was essentially identical to the brushless XR driver I already had, except that it has a hammer setting. However, it is significantly larger, and the chuck and housing appear to be of higher quality. I suppose it makes sense if it's going to be hammering constantly. This drill has a separate, distinctive torque adjustment that produces loud, clear clicks. It also tightens the chuck better than the normal XR I own, producing clicks that are more distinct. It kind of reminds me of a Bosch of about the same size that has the hammer/drill features while utilizing the hammer function. Given the price, I couldn't pass on this beast. I was forced to choose between saving a little money and carrying around a legitimate SDS on ladders vs getting away with a hammer drill that I could also use for driving. This won't cut through masonry like an SDS will, but it will still accomplish the task far more effectively than trying to use an impact or a standard drill like a moron. Additionally, it has the ability to drill deeply into different types of material.

I had experimented with a number of drills to install concrete screws in old concrete. The majority of them go through carbide drills like children through candy canes, taking a lot of time and pressure (and the cordless ones eat batteries for snacks). This puppy drilled a few inches like butter into concrete that was 25 years old. With two settings, the variable speed trigger can accommodate most needs and is precisely calibrated. The 1/2" chuck is a good addition, and it works well as a standard drill as well. A keyless chuck might be convenient, but you'd have a lot of difficulty getting the bit out after hammer drilling and getting the chuck tight enough for that (and it does light drilling fine without using the key). Although I won't be erecting skyscrapers with it, I'll be content if it serves me for a few years in terms of domestic tasks and projects.

I needed a strong drill to make 1" holes in the stumps of some apple and holly trees that I recently felled so that I could inject dissolver fluid. I went to a nearby hardware store and bought a cheap model after discovering that my cordless drills were useless, only for it to break down and catch fire. Not a pleasant encounter. So I bought this DeWalt despite though I didn't have many other use cases in mind, and I'm pleased I did. Although it did become a little warm, it had no trouble drilling dozens of holes in green hardwood. Although relatively light and portable, it is powerful.
